A Little About Us

New Horizons Credit Union's history offers a unique story of progress and growth. We were chartered on January 31, 1950 as H & W Company Credit Union (Hollingsworth & Whitney Co.) which was a paper mill company that moved a division from Waterville, Maine to Mobile, AL. Then, later the company merged with Scott Paper Company at which time we became known as Scott Southern Division Employees Credit Union and soon after - simply Scott Credit Union, and our core field of membership was the Scott Paper Company employees and their families for over forty years, but change was coming.

As the years progressed and industries changed - the Credit Union was flexible enough to change with the times and opened up its field of membership to include more of the  Mobile and surrounding communities. Hence, the need for a new name reflects a new chapter in the Credit Union's history - New Horizons Credit Union.  The Credit Union did this while keeping true to its Mission to offer financial solutions to better our members' lives. So, since 1950 and all of the Credit Union's transitions, we've been successfully serving members for over 70 years.

We are a member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative, governed by a member-elected Board of Directors. We lend to our neighbors with all lending decisions made locally. Your best financial life can start here, and your hard-earned deposits are re-invested right here – on the Gulf Coast. We proudly serve Mobile, Baldwin, Washington, Clarke, Monroe, and Escambia counties in Alabama, and Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa counties in Florida. We offer members a variety of financial services including surcharge-free worldwide ATM service through Allpoint and 24/7 Online and Mobile account access via NewHCU.org. New Horizons is federally insured by the NCUA and is an Equal Housing Lender, offering Solutions for the Real World.

What Makes Us Different

Our main goal as a credit union is, like our motto says, to offer"solutions for the real world."  We understand that we are here to help our members earn money instead of costing them money.  New Horizons Credit Union offers many convenient branches, and for our members living or traveling out of the area - we offer surcharge-free Allpoint ATM access when using our Debit Card at over 55,000 ATMs worldwide and no-cost 24/7 Online & Mobile banking services for world-wide access to your account.  Members can apply for loans via our secured online loan application process for both consumer and mortgage loans.  There is no reason to have to walk into a branch with the electronic services available to our members.

More than 95 million Americans have chosen credit unions over banks because credit unions are owned and controlled by the members. Instead of an earnings forecast to meet or outside stockholders to satisfy, we focus on our members and the community. That’s why the American Banker Gallup Consumer Survey has shown credit unions have surpassed banks in overall customer service and satisfaction since 1983.

When you become a member of New Horizons, you acquire a “share” in the Credit Union. With your membership, you are entitled a vote for our Board of Directors, regardless of the assets you keep or business you do with the Credit Union. Officers and directors are chosen from the membership and serve on a volunteer basis. Since we do not have any stockholders, earnings not set aside for reserves are returned to our members in the form of better rates on loans, higher dividends on savings, and new services.

Your deposits in New Horizons are insured up to $250,000.00 by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), rated the strongest of all federal insurance agencies. IRA accounts are insured separately at $250,000.  To learn more about how your funds are federally insured by the NCUA, click here.

Just a friendly reminder that New Horizons Credit Union has a system that monitors members' accounts for possible fraud.  You may be contacted if fraud is suspected, but NHCU will never ask for personal information such as online credentials, your entire card number, account number, or social security number via email, voice, or text messaging.
